While some laugh at Daniel Tosh’s obnoxious and offensive humor, others don’t give in to the racism and sexism. My story on Tosh’s show ripping on women…

We know Daniel Tosh is just a comedian. But somebody has to take on comics who exploit racism and misogyny for cheap laughs.

Every episode of Tosh.0 can be summed up thusly:

Actually funny joke to lull you into thinking this may be entertaining.

Then “slut whore tranny tranny fatty slut fatty.”

Then horror when you realize people around you are still laughing.

This guy makes me so angry. I’ve always had a sort of rule for myself that if something is funnier and more clever than it is offensive, I’ll let it slide to a certain extent. I mean, we can take a joke. But these aren’t even jokes. It’s incredibly lazy, this “comedy” style he has. I’ve seen it replicated in every middle school. Point at something, call it a name, laughter.

“Words like ‘bitch,’ ‘slut,’ ‘whore’ — whenever a guy starts improv for the first time, he’ll fall back on these when describing women and automatically assume it’s funny. I try to explain that there’s no need because it doesn’t help make your bit funny,” O’Neill said. “Its always the cliché first sketch that’s fratty about a girl being a slut, and we have to train comedians to be more creative than that. Every comedian is different, but this type of humor isn’t the way to get respect. Tosh gets away with it because Comedy Central allows it.”

I no longer feel sad that I don’t have Comedy Central at my house.

Activist prevents Israeli officer from arresting Palestinian child

During Sunday’s Jerusalem Day events, a Palestinian boy, perhaps 10 years old, was chased down an East Jerusalem street by a very angry officer of the Border Police. The boy tripped and fell, then picked himself up just as the Border Police officer reached him and tried to grab him. But a 22 year-old female Israeli activist prevented the boy’s arrest by throwing herself between the two, allowing the Palestinian boy to flee.

Jerusalem Day is meant to be a celebration of the city’s ‘reunification’ following Israel’s victory in the 1967 war. In practice, it is a day for Israeli nationalists, draped in flags, dancing in circles, singing and chanting (including the popular Israeli nationalist chant, ‘death to Arabs’) as they march through the streets of East Jerusalem and the Old City. Many of the Jewish demonstrators are bused in from right-wing yeshivas in Israel and the West Bank

This year, an Orthodox Jewish man grabbed the Palestinian flag from the hands of a 10 year-old boy and refused to return it. The boy, enraged, tried to prise it out of the Jewish man’s hands. A Border Police officer, seeing the struggle between a 10 year-old Palestinian boy and a fully grown Jewish man, chased the Palestinian boy rather than ordering the Jewish man to return the flag. Someone made a montage of the incident and posted it on Facebook, with commentary. Note the expression of rage in the Border Police officer’s eyes, as seen in the second photo.

In the end the boy got away, due to the intervention of a 22 year-old Israeli activist from Jerusalem named Sahar Vardi, who threw herself in front of the Border Police officer just as he was about to grab the child. Photojournalist Haim Schwarczenberg caught the incident.

The incident was also filmed and the clip posted on Youtube.

Spoiler: It Follows A Downhill Slope, from pretty hilarious and spot-on critique of white appropriation, to uncritically and opportunistically pandering to white culture’s prejudices.

Ali G: Straight white-identifying Jewish male playing straight white male appropriating black culture.
RESULT: HILARIOUS.

Borat Sagdiyev: Straight white-identifying Jewish male playing straight white dominant-culture member of an “other”.
RESULT: A little off, grievously offensive to people from backgrounds of former Soviet states.

Brüno Gehard: Straight white-identifying Jewish male playing gay white male, using an array of gay stereotypes for “humor”.
RESULT: In unfunny territory, deeply so for people identifying as LGBT.

Admiral General Aladeen: Straight white-identifying Jewish male playing presumably Arab man, using an array of “Arab” and “Muslim” stereotypes for “humor”, during a time when Muslims and Arabs are stigmatized and oppressed.
RESULT: Grievously unfunny to Muslims, and people are noticing the racism.

Some of you are wondering why I’m emphasizing the Jewish aspect of his identity; I may note that it’s not the “Jewish” part of his identity that’s a problem, it’s the “White-identifying” part that is.

And it follows to type — White Jewish Men have had a history of playing, and playing hard, towards white culture’s prejudices. Anything to make sure the monster that is white culture doesn’t eat them.

Whether Cohen buys this shit or has internalized it is beyond my ability to know, or want to know.
